Governor’s Island, a New York MUST

Posted in Fun Times, Travel on July 27th, 2010 by Domestic Nest – Be the first to comment

This is where you board a FREE ferry to Governor’s Island from Manhattan. Governor’s Island is rich in military history and was an active Coast Guard base until 1995. In 2002, the island was sold for $1.00 by the U.S.A. to the people of New York. The island is now open to the public between June and October. It’s a popular venue for private and public events of all sizes, but is best known for being a readily accessible, FREE escape from the bustle of Manhattan. It provides 172 acres full of parks, beautiful views, historic buildings, and a 2-mile promenade where you can take or rent a bike. This is an oasis not to be missed if you find yourself wanting to get away from the city, even if it’s just for an hour.

Oh, hello Brooklyn. Wanna hang out some time? How ’bout now? I’ll be right over.

How does she get any work done?!?

Home, Sweet Suburban Street

Posted in Fun Times on July 23rd, 2010 by Domestic Nest – 1 Comment

This was on my car when I got home from a little vacay this week. I was already super excited to be home, but to be greeted by such a sweet neighborhood family was so wonderful! Thanks, gang!

It’s been a childhood dream of mine to live in the Big Apple. Home of the Yankees. The melting pot. The city that never sleeps. Capitol of the world. I stopped pursuing this dream when I made a quick decision to head out to Los Angeles a few years ago. But my baby sister (definitely not a baby anymore) lives and works in Manhattan. The pride I take in her courage to conquer the subway, land a high rise office on Wall St., and nest in the cutest apartment in the West Village is even more than had I accomplished it myself. As much as I couldn’t wait to return to this magnetic metropolis, my greatest joy during the trip was celebrating my sister’s life in the big city.

More to come on our NYC adventures.

The Case For Your Local Meat Case…

Posted in Men Nest Too on July 17th, 2010 by Domestic Nest – Be the first to comment

Tip-Top Meats

Its the height of summertime, and the bar-b-q gets fired up every weekend. As the man of the house, I can’t help but take great pride in assuming most of the grilling responsibilities. Warning:  the following information will probably not pertain to our vegetarian readers.

The Rock

There is never a bad time to meet your local butcher. With family, friends, and co-workers apt to drop over, valuable information is needed in order to please your most beloved carnivors. Here in our nest, bringing  delicious food to the table starts with quality ingredients.

Quality for us means consulting Peter, our local butcher at Tip Top Meats. In this age of speed and efficiency, there is no substitute for a little face-to-face time with the guy that cut your dinner. Local butchers have a vested interest in getting you high quality meat. Because if they only competed on price the mega-mart would always win. That is not to say you can not get high quality at the mega-mart, but your questions and ultimately your selection is deeply personal (at least for us).

Some things that we like about our local butcher are:

1. They don’t carry anything less than USDA Choice (Yield Grades 1 and 2). When available they carry USDA Prime, which is available more frequently now that many restaurants are out of business.
2. Meat is dry aged at least two days before sale.
3. If they don’t have it, they can order it.
4. If  you only need a single serving, no problem.
5. They can hand-cut whatever type of cut you want, and provide the exact size that you want.
6. If you have questions or want to experiment they can can be your guide.

Bon appétit

The Butcher’s Limerick:

There is a man whose goal is Tip-Top, upon his rock splits many stock

Of course you can see he has solid stock, that is why he needs a lock

This man knows your every query

But best about your quarry

If you waiver he ain’t no fairy, question his butcher block its boss on the block

July 4th Festivities

Posted in Fun Times on July 6th, 2010 by Domestic Nest – 308 Comments

The kids in our neighborhood decorated their bikes and put on a parade to kick off an all-day block party that will leave many guests recovering well into the week.

Matty & I spent the evening in the San Diego Bay aboard a friend’s boat. There were at least 6 displays of fireworks going off in different communities all around the bay. It was a sparkly, magical evening. We happened to be on the boat with two men who are members of the U.S. Armed Forces, one who will graduate as a Navy SEAL in a few weeks. I couldn’t help but tear up, thinking about how they are willing to risk their lives and dedicate their talents in service to this great nation. It made me so grateful to live in a country with such abundant opportunity. I hope your holiday weekend was safe and relaxing!

Nesting Goal Update: Fireplace Facelift

Posted in Nest Decor on July 1st, 2010 by Domestic Nest – 3 Comments

June’s nesting goal was to lighten up the hearth and rework the brass fireplace cover. There wasn’t anything wrong with our fireplace before. But we think we can better appreciate the stone and bounce a little bit more light around the room now.

Take the jump to see photos of the process and see our (VERY short) source list. This makeover was almost free.

Thrifted Lamp

Posted in Nest Decor, Thrift Finds on June 29th, 2010 by Domestic Nest – 1 Comment

We needed a lamp, so I headed to the DAV to see if they had any thing that would work. I bought this lamp base there.

When I took it to the shade store, the cashier told me that she thought it was made of plaster and pretty much heinous. That is, until she saw what it was made from. Then she fell in love with it for the same reason I did.

The lamp base was handmade as someone tediously wound corrugated paper around itself to create the form. It had a tag still attached that said it was hand crafted in the USA by a FLUTE craftsman. I’ve tried to research, but can’t find any information about FLUTE. It kind of reminds me of the clever cardboard designs that pop up from time to time like this, this, and THIS.

Anyhow, I’m really happy with how it looks in our home!

NEW ETSY SHOP!

Posted in Etsy stuff on June 28th, 2010 by Domestic Nest – Be the first to comment

We’re SUPER excited to open up our new etsy shop!

Here’s why we’re doing it…to keep our Domestic Nest shop geared towards the domestic, and to have a space solely dedicated to our line of leather goods. When we started Domestic Nest, we knew we wanted the name and the concept to be broad. We weren’t sure what kinds of products we would offer and needed to be open to trying new things. Well, the leather has been our favorite medium so far. And the shop name ‘Domestic Nest’ really has nothing to do with leather. We’ll still sell sewn items, jewelry and home decor in the Domestic Nest shop. But if you’re looking for leather, head on over to doneLeather!

Mention our blog and get FREE shipping all summer long (through the end of August.)

Butter Synonymous With Love

Posted in Cooking on June 26th, 2010 by Domestic Nest – Be the first to comment

A wise man told me…

Butter and love mean the same thing. Try something for me. Gaze deeply into your lover’s eyes and just say, “butter.” They’ll know what you mean.

Baby Season is upon us!

Making things for people I love is infinitely more fun than making things for money.

These baby mocs are headed to VA because John-O and Meagan are having a baby boy.

Congrats to all you Moms & Dads-to-be out there!
